Should I Hire a Professional Writer?

I have been asked on many occasions, why should I hire a professional writer when I can write myself? On the surface, it appears hiring a professional writer might be overkill, however I believe there are three key areas why businesses should hire professional writers.

 Perspective

 A fresh perspective is needed to make your copy pop and convey your message effectively. A professional writer has the advantage of not getting wrapped up in day-to-day operations and examines the positives and negatives of your product or service. You are very close to your business. It is your baby, and just like having a real child, business owners tend to gloss over the flaws and focus on the positives. A professional writer can take on the persona of a customer and determine what they want and need. That fresh perspective breathes life into the copy and is presented with the customer in mind.     I love the analogy to other services. I often say I’m a talented amateur when it comes to graphics, but I would never represent myself as a graphic artist. I leave that to the people with the real talent. :-)

  4. An excellent post. And if you ask “Why should I hire a professional writer?” chances are good you may need one. It’s true that most business people are too close to their own products and services to view them with the professional eye a copywriter brings to the project. Many tend to focus on the features, rather than the benefits, and they end up with boring copy. A good professional marketing writer can transform plain into phenomenal!

  6. Fantastic post, Wade, and important information for those on the fence about hiring a pro. As you know, my niche is medicine and health care so many of my clients are physicians and hospitals. Some (by no means all) docs fail to realize that an impressive command of medical knowledge and healing powers doesn’t necessarily translate into ability to effectively communicate that info to the lay public. I call it the HouseMD Syndrome. They usually come around and ask for a “cure” after they’ve written a bit for the public and did not get the kudos and results they envisioned. I similar “syndromes” exist in other niches too.
